Groveport

Nothing great is accomplished without effort. And the founding of Groveport is a story of conflicting egos, battered pride, Midwestern political intrigue and the effort of its citizens to build something enduring and great. For nearly 40 years, Jacob B. Wert and William H. Rarey fought over what to call this small farming community ten miles southeast of Columbus. For these two men, it was an issue of ensuring their legacy. The two men built two towns separated by twenty feet of dirty, rutty street: Wert’s Grove to the west and Rarey’s Port to the east.

The battle of egos and ambitions raged from 1812, when the area was first settled, through 1847, when the residents of the divided town decided they had enough of the business, social, and political headaches and wrestled the decision away from the town’s feuding families. Over a small wood stove in the back of a coopers shop, the 50 town residents met without the feuding parties and settled on a name: Groveport.

This effort at cooperation has carried on and as a result, residents have created an excellent quality of life, support for their schools, strong commerce centers, and convenient access to the amenities expected of the 15th largest metropolitan center in the United States. Groveports convenient location near I-270, I-70 and SR 33 makes it a doorway to opportunities all over central and southeastern Ohio.

Today, this village of nearly 5,000 people and eight square miles is a thriving community with access to a variety of diverse entertainment, recreational, business, and educational activities. The Arena District, home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets and great dining and entertainment, is a short trip into downtown Columbus. Residents also have easy access to The Ohio State University, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), the historical Ohio and Palace Theaters, the Columbus Museum of Art, and The Franklin Park Conservatory. All of which provide individuals and families something special regardless of interest or age.

Staying closer to home, Groveport residents enjoy the over 200 acres of community parks offering streams, woodlands, meadows, fishing ponds and athletic fields. Also convenient to Groveport is one of the three major Columbus Metro Parks. The Groveport Parks and Recreation Department also manages an indoor recreation center, community pools, adult and children™s athletic leagues and a number of summer youth programs.

However, as in most communities the school district hosts the majority of the town’s social activities  both academic and athletic. Like most of the districts around Central Ohio, the Groveport Madison Local School District has experienced tremendous growth. Today, the district educates over 6,500 students drawn from Groveport, some areas of Columbus, and surrounding unincorporated areas. Groveport’s schools are proud to provide a diverse and caring learning environment supporting all subject areas in order to meet each child’s individual learning and developmental needs. If Jacob B. Wert and William H. Rarey were around today, they would hardly recognize the villages their families started over 180 years ago. What they would see is the strength and desire of today’s residents who have come together to build a greater community.
