Powell

Twenty years ago, Powell was simply a distant dot on the edge of Franklin and Delaware County with less than 400 residents. Today Powell, together with its neighbor Lewis Center, is at the heart of the fastest growing region of Central Ohio with more than 10,000 residents, dozens of successful business, and thousands of nearby activities for residents of all ages. Money Magazine recently named Powell The Best Place To Live In Ohio and The 18th Best Place To Live In The Nation.

Originally settled in 1801 on the high bluffs overlooking the Olentangy River by settlers from Middlebury, CT, Powell was incorporated as a municipality in February 1947. Today the City of Powell covers approximately 4.8 square miles and is located fourteen miles north of Columbus on the rolling hills overlooking the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers.

To balance its exponential growth with its unique rural heritage, the City of Powell has worked to strengthen its identity as a rural greenbelt town; redeveloping the town center to emphasize its history; establishing an access management program to reduce traffic issues; achieving a balanced land use mix; creating a small town economic development program; and a provision to limit City services. Together these goals will enable Powell to control its own destiny and maintain its rural community feeling.

Servicing the City of Powell, the Olentangy Local School District has had great success in balancing the recent population growth and increased social expectations of the community. In addition to Powell, the 110-square-mile Olentangy Local School District also serves all or part of ten other municipalities including Orange Township, Berkshire Township, Berlin Township, Concord Township, Genoa Township, Liberty Township, Delaware Township, the City of Delaware, the City of Columbus, and the City of Westerville. One of the advantages of the growth of the Powell area is the opportunities it presents to get involved and do something of interest. Residents are twenty minutes from downtown Columbus and Delaware, five minutes from the 845 acre O’Shaughnessy Dam, ten minutes from the 8,600 acre Alum Creek State Park, one mile from the 1,050-acre Highbanks Metro Park, and two miles from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium/Zoombezi Bay  complex. The Columbus Zoo is  nationally renowned and was just rated the number one zoo in the country.  The  complex consists of a 20-acre amusement and water park and 100 acres of gardens and naturalistic habitats for over 6,000 animals.

Also located close by is the Polaris Fashion Place, offering over 1.5 million square feet of shopping and entertainment opportunities under one roof. Add in the surrounding stores, restaurants, and theaters, residents are never at a loss for entertainment.

Taken together, it is these opportunities to live, work, and play that have brought Powell from a small town community to the center of it all in Central Ohio.
