Less than 10 miles east of downtown Columbus, you will encounter the diverse city of Whitehall. Considered a crossroads to communities throughout eastern Franklin County, Whitehall is home to the Defense Supply Center Columbus, one of the largest suppliers of weapon systems spare parts and end items to the United States Military. Whitehall is also known for the Town & Country Shopping Center, recognized as one of the first actual modern shopping centers in the United States.
Settled in 1805 by refugees from Nova Scotia, and later by veterans from the War of 1812, Whitehall was largely a farming community between Alum Creek and Big Walnut Creek. In the early 19th Century, Robert Brotherton of White Hall, England purchased 156 acres and used a portion of the property to build what is known as Ye Olde Whitehall Tavern along the famous National Road. It was a popular overnight stagecoach inn.
Eventually, the land and tavern were sold to Abram Doney and the small farming community unofficially adopted the name Whitehall in honor of the local landmark, White Hall Tavern. Whitehall was finally able to incorporate as a village in 1947. This was the same time that Town & Country became the nation™s first regional shopping center.
As soldiers returned from Europe after World War II, they moved to suburban areas creating a housing boom. Communities close to urban centers such as Columbus grew rapidly. From 1950 to 1960 the population in Whitehall grew from 4,100 to 20,900. The population in Whitehall has held steady since then at just over 20,000 residents.
Today, Whitehall finds itself at the center of a vibrant and alive community with access to a variety of entertainment, recreational, business, and educational activities. The Arena District, home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, along with great dining and entertainment venues, is a short fifteen minute drive into downtown Columbus. Residents also have easy access to The Ohio State University, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), both the Ohio and Palace Theaters, the Columbus Museum of Art, and The Franklin Park Conservatory. Whitehall, a community that was once on the cutting edge of retail vision with Towne & Country Mall, is just ten minutes from the nationally acclaimed shopping and entertainment district of Easton Town Center.
Unlike many communities, the Whitehall City School District has not had the dramatic increases in student enrollment experienced by other suburban school districts. With over 2,500 students in attendance, a large number of extra-curricular and academic programs are available to help them succeed. It is this focus on improving opportunities that motivates the district to address the educational needs of its students. As a result, the district has one of the most successful English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in the Central Ohio area.
