Gahanna

Founded in 1849, Gahanna is a Native American word for three creeks joining into one. Located just 15 minutes northeast of Columbus, Gahanna is situated along the banks of Big Walnut Creek and Rocky Fork Creek where a grain mill once served as Gahanna’s primary economic source for several decades. Today, Gahanna continues to hold true to the historical allegiance to the creeks with the creation of Creekside Park, a centralized site of economic development and community activity. The recently completed Creekside Park project provides a nature escape along creek-side walkways that flow around Big Walnut Creek, through Friendship Park and inter-connect with one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants in downtown Olde Gahanna.

Residents of Gahanna take advantage of the proximity of Creekside Park to Olde Gahanna by holding frequent and annual festivals and events. Beginning each year in the Spring, Gahanna hosts an Herb Festival followed by the Creekside Jazz and Blues Festival in June. Neighbors and friends line the streets in celebration of the July 4th Freedom Festival and enjoy long warm evenings at the Summer Music in the Parks events. Wrapping up the festivities in the Fall, you will enjoy the bargains at the annual Gahanna Flea Market and gear up for winter with the largest single-day holiday event and lighted nighttime parade known as the Holiday Light Parade.

The entertainment isn’t limited to inside Gahanna city limits either. In a short 20 minute drive, you can experience all the amenities that downtown Columbus has to offer. Adjacent to Gahanna is a small unincorporated village named Blacklick. Also deriving its name from Native American inhabitants, the name Blacklick came from the deer that the Native Americans witnessed licking the black salt rocks on the banks of the Rocky Fork Creek. With equal accessibility to Interstates 270 and 670 as Gahanna, as a Blacklick resident you can enjoy the rural setting and small town feel that Blacklick offers, while taking full advantage of its neighboring larger cities. Being known as one of the largest suburban communities in Central Ohio, Gahanna has one of the few school systems that have built their schools within neighborhood communities and offers one centralized High School. Because of this, residents within the Gahanna-Jefferson School District put forth a concerted effort to build unity through strong schools systems and strong community involvement. Blacklick residents also benefit from the unity within the Gahanna-Jefferson School District since most of the Blacklick student population attends Gahanna schools.
