Canal Winchester

Driving east on State Route 33 from Columbus to Lancaster, you will come to Canal Winchester, a community rich in history and purpose. This once sleepy bedroom community of Columbus was the gateway into the heart of Ohio’s rural farmlands, rolling hills and old forests of southeastern Ohio. Here, Canal Winchester’s 6,000+ residents enjoy a warm mix of rural and suburban living. Founded in 1828 as a midway point between Columbus and Lancaster along the Ohio & Erie Canal, the village of Canal Winchester is located on the southern edge of Franklin County and a northern section of Fairfield County. Because of its proximity to the canal and its rich agricultural lands, Canal Winchester flourished.

As the canals gave way to the railroad, and the railroad to the horseless carriages of the early 20th Century, the community continued to prosper while holding onto its historical roots.

Located on the edge of everything that makes Central Ohio a great place to live, work and play, Canal Winchester is only a fifteen minute drive to downtown Columbus and the Columbus International Airport, a ten minute drive to most other major interstates, and convenient to local shopping centers. Within the community, the Winchester Square and Waterloo Crossing Shopping Centers provide shopping for everyday conveniences, as well as established retailers, fine dining and commercial offices. This planned growth area allows Canal Winchester to offer all the conveniences of a suburban area while maintaining the integrity of its vibrant and historic downtown.

You will find the downtown of Canal Winchester to be the heart of this wonderful community. With an active historic preservation organization, the residents have worked to maintain the charm and uniqueness that has made Canal Winchester a destination for people interested in Americana. Canal Winchester is home to the Mid-Ohio Doll and Toy Museum, Barber’s Museum and Hall of Fame, Slate Run Vineyard and Winery, Slate Run Historical Farm, and the last original covered bridge in Franklin County. It is these qualities that have made Canal Winchester a major destination for bicycling enthusiasts seeking back country roads, interesting architecture, and historic roots.

However, for residents, it is the school system that ties this community together. Like several communities around the Columbus area, the Canal Winchester Local School District has had to respond to recent growth in the district. This has resulted in the building of new schools, the buying of large tracts of land to plan for future growth, and providing the necessary supports for future educational success. The historical importance and modern charm of Canal Winchester makes it more than just a gateway to southeastern Ohio. It makes it a gateway to the future of Central Ohio, as well as an inviting place to live, work and play.
