Hilliard

As far as cities in Central Ohio are concerned, Hilliard is a relative youngster. In 1886 when John Hilliard, the town’s founder, built a railroad station miles west of Columbus he paved the way for a small farming community to spring-up. Originally know as Hilliard Station, today Hilliard is a modern, successful suburb with an eleven square mile footprint and over 26,000 residents.

Located between the open farm lands of Madison County and the Big Darby Creek, a State and National Scenic River, to the west, Upper Arlington to the east, Dublin to the north, and Columbus to the south, Hilliard is the ideal location providing quick and easy access to all of Central Ohio’s entertainment, business, and recreational amenities.

While major regional shopping and entertainment venues, such as Polaris Fashion Place or Easton Town Center, can be found only twenty minutes from Hilliard, residents can also shop a little closer to home at the beautiful and redesigned Mall at Tuttle Crossing. Featuring major retailers such as Macy’s, Kauffmann’s, Sears and JC Penny’s plus over 130 other specialty retailers, the Mall at Tuttle Crossing is a favorite among Hilliard residents. All of this is located in the heart of a white collar business district that includes BMW Financial Services, Cardinal Orthopedic Institute, and Allstate Insurance.

Hilliard’s location also offers residents a convenient ten minute commute to the best Columbus has to offer. The Arena District, home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets and great dining and entertainment, is a ten minute drive into downtown off of I-670. Residents also have easy access to The Ohio State University, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), the historical Ohio and Palace Theaters, the Columbus Museum of Art, and The Franklin Park Conservatory. All of which provide individuals and families something special regardless of interest or age.

Since the completion of Columbus’ outerbelt, I-270, in 1986, and its excellent location, Hilliard has experienced tremendous growth. Like most of the suburbs in Central Ohio, this growth has affected the Hilliard City School District as well. Its enrollment has increased nearly 111 percent since 1990 creating the state’s ninth largest district serving over 14,000 students in an area encompassing nearly 60 square miles.

In order to meet this growing enrollment, Hilliard has invested in new school buildings and made capital improvements to its existing facilities. With an improvement in curriculum opportunities, students have the ability to explore a variety of content areas, from the core subjects to an array of electives. If John Hilliard could see Hilliard now, he would likely not recognize it. However, he would be very proud to have his name associated with such a strong and thriving community.
